Aberdeen and its wider landscape shown in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

Beyond Aberdeen, the map takes in Westhill, Kingswells and Milltimber.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 17 · Aberdeen & Deeside, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Aberdeen rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1903.
