About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 16 · Aberystwyth, 1905, focusing the original cartography around Aberystwyth rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1905.
