A historic view of Arthur's Seat in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

This historic view of Arthur's Seat takes in Edinburgh, Prestonpans, Musselburgh and Newcraighall, with The Nether Hill also part of the mapped landscape.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 8 · Edinburgh District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Arthur's Seat rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis. Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century.

At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1903.
