What this map covers

Ben Nevis is shown within a wider mapped area that includes Fort William, Caol, Glen Nevis and Lochyside, together with Càrn Mòr Dearg.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 15 · Fort-William District, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Ben Nevis rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1904.
