What this map covers

The geographic coverage follows the exact product crop of Birmingham shown in the listing imagery.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 18 · Birmingham, Leicester, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Birmingham rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.

Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1903.
