A historic-map wooden coaster of Box Hill, using Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

This view of Box Hill takes in part of Surrey Hills National Landscape, alongside River Mole. It also takes in Dorking, Pixham, Westhumble and Box Hill Village.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 30 · Surrey, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Box Hill rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.

Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1903.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.

  • Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
