About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 28 · Bath & Bristol, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Cardiff rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1904.
