The mapped area around Cat Bells includes part of Lake District National Park, together with Maiden Moor. It also takes in Keswick, Stair, Grange and Portinscale.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Cat Bells rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible.
The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. This particular source was published in 1903.
