Historic Chester mapping from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

The historic mapping around Chester extends across Shotton and Connah's Quay.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 12 · Cheshire, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Chester rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1902.
