What this map covers
This view of Conic Hill takes in Drymen, Balmaha, Milton of Buchanan and Luss, with part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park also within the map.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 7 · Glasgow & Clyde, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Conic Hill rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1902.
