A historic view of Coniston Water in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a wooden coaster.
What this map covers
This historic view of Coniston Water takes in Coniston, Satterthwaite, Hawkshead and Torver, with Old Man of Coniston and Brim Fell also part of the mapped landscape.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Coniston Water rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. This particular source was published in 1903.
