A mug presenting Criccieth through Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

This map of Criccieth includes Moel-Y-Gest and part of the wider landscape of Eryri National Park. It also takes in Porthmadog, Morfa Bychan and Penmorfa.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · North Wales, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Criccieth rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.

The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1904.
