What this map covers
Lake District National Park forms part of the wider mapped setting around Crummock Water, with Grasmoor also within the view. It also takes in Keswick, Ennerdale Bridge, Buttermere and Lamplugh.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Crummock Water rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1903.
