What this map covers
This product uses the reviewed historic-map view of Derby shown in the listing imagery.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 13 · Derby & Nottingham, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Derby rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1902.
