About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Derwentwater rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography.
Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1903.
