Ditchling Beacon and its wider landscape shown in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a wooden coaster.

What this map covers

Ditchling Beacon is shown within a wider mapped area that includes Hassocks, Pyecombe, Keymer and Clayton and part of South Downs National Park.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 32 · Sussex, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Ditchling Beacon rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.

Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1902.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.

  • Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
