What this map covers

The geographic coverage follows the exact product crop of Doncaster shown in the listing imagery.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 9 · Sheffield, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Doncaster rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.

It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1904.
