Historic mapping of Ennerdale Water and its surrounding landscape, reproduced as a wooden coaster from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.
What this map covers
The historic mapping around Ennerdale Water reaches into Lake District National Park and also includes Haycock. It also takes in Ennerdale Bridge and Kirkland.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Ennerdale Water rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1903.
