Fowey shown through Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

This view of Fowey takes in part of Cornwall National Landscape, alongside Pont Pill. It also takes in St. Austell, St Blazey and Par.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 37 · Cornwall, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Fowey rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.

Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1903.
