What this map covers

This map of Haweswater includes High Raise and part of the wider landscape of Lake District National Park. It also takes in Bampton Grange, Keld, Shap and Patterdale.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Haweswater rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country.

It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1903.
