What this map covers
Beyond Ingleborough, the map includes Horton in Ribblesdale, Brackenbottom, Selside and Wharfe, as well as Lord's Seat.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 6 · Harrogate, 1906, focusing the original cartography around Ingleborough rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1906.
