A mug presenting Kinder Scout through Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

Kinder Scout is shown within a wider mapped area that includes New Mills, Hayfield, Little Hayfield and Hague Bar and part of Peak District National Park.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 9 · Sheffield, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Kinder Scout rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers.

Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. This particular source was published in 1904.
