A mug of Kingston-upon-Hull, reproduced from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

Kingston-upon-Hull appears within a wider mapped area that also includes Hull and Hessle.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 10 · Lincoln Wolds, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Kingston-upon-Hull rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.

The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1902.
