About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · North Wales, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Llandudno rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1904.
