Historic mapping of Loch Awe and its surrounding landscape, reproduced as a wooden coaster from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.
What this map covers
Alongside Loch Awe, the mapped area includes Inveraray, Dalavich, St Catherines and Lochawe and the landscape around Ben Cruachan and Stob Garbh.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · Oban & Loch Awe, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Loch Awe rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1903.
