Historic mapping of Loch Earn and its surrounding landscape, reproduced as a wooden coaster from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.
What this map covers
The historic mapping around Loch Earn reaches into Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and also includes Ben Vorlich. It also takes in St Fillans and Lochearnhead.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 12 · Central Perthshire, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Loch Earn rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
