What this map covers

About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 12 · Central Perthshire, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Loch Earn rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
