What this map covers
Cairngorms National Park forms part of the wider mapped setting around Loch Ericht, with Bràigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain also within the view. It also takes in Blair Atholl, Kirkmichael, Bridge of Tilt and Killiecrankie.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 16 · Braemar and Blair Atholl, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Loch Ericht rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country. Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible.
Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1902.
