About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · Oban & Loch Awe, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Loch Etive rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1903.
