A historic-map wooden coaster of Loch Linnhe, using Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

Beyond Loch Linnhe, the map includes Duror, North Cuil, South Cuil and Ardsheal, as well as Sgorr Mhic Eacharna and Beinn Leamhain.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · Oban & Loch Awe, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Loch Linnhe rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. This particular source was published in 1903.

A note on map detail

The original map was printed at approximately 1:127,000. This artwork is reproduced at approximately 1:96,000, around 1.3× larger, making the original cartography and place names easier to see.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.

  • Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
