A historic-map mug of Loch Lomond, using Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

This historic view of Loch Lomond takes in Greenock, Clydebank, Bishopbriggs and Erskine, with Beinn Tharsuinn and Beinn Ruadh also part of the mapped landscape.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 7 · Glasgow & Clyde, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Loch Lomond rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.

Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1902.
