About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 20 · Central Ross & Cromarty, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Loch Maree rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1902.
