Loch Maree and its wider landscape shown in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

Alongside Loch Maree, the mapped area includes Taagan, Letterewe and Talladale and the landscape around Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair and Sgùrr an Tuill Bhàin.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 20 · Central Ross & Cromarty, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Loch Maree rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible.

The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. This particular source was published in 1902.
