Historic Loch Rannoch mapping from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a wooden coaster.

What this map covers

This view of Loch Rannoch takes in part of Cairngorms National Park, alongside Glas Mheall Mor. It also takes in Kinloch Rannoch, Bridge of Gaur, Annat and Ruighe nan Sorach.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 16 · Braemar and Blair Atholl, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Loch Rannoch rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903.

Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1902.

A note on map detail

The original map was printed at approximately 1:127,000. This artwork is reproduced at approximately 1:176,000, about 30% smaller than the original scale, allowing a wider area of the original map to be included.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.

  • Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
