What this map covers
This view of Mousehole takes in part of Cornwall National Landscape, alongside Drift Reservoir. It also takes in Penzance, Marazion and Paul.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 37 · Cornwall, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Mousehole rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible.
Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1903.
