New Quay shown through Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a wooden coaster.
What this map covers
This historic view of New Quay takes in Llanarth, Caerwedros and Llanllwchaiarn, with New Quay Head and Afon Gido also part of the mapped landscape.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 22 · Carmarthen, 1903, focusing the original cartography around New Quay rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
