Nottingham shown through Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a mug.

What this map covers

This map of Nottingham reaches into the surrounding area, including Ilkeston, West Bridgford and Carlton.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 13 · Derby & Nottingham, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Nottingham rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography.

Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. This particular source was published in 1902.
