What this map covers
The historic mapping around Pendle Hill covers Brierfield, Higham, Barley and Downham and reaches into Forest of Bowland National Landscape.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 6 · Harrogate, 1906, focusing the original cartography around Pendle Hill rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1906.
