About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 33 · New Forrest & Isle of Wight, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Portsmouth rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. This particular source was published in 1902.
