What this map covers

About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 11 · North Wales, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Pwllheli rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1904.
