About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 6 · Harrogate, 1906, focusing the original cartography around Ripon rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1906.
