Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping of Rydal Water, reproduced here as a wooden coaster.

What this map covers

This map of Rydal Water includes Dove Crag and part of the wider landscape of Lake District National Park. It also takes in Ambleside, Rydal, Grasmere and Skelwith Bridge.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Rydal Water rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible.

The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1903.

A note on map detail

The original map was printed at approximately 1:127,000. This artwork is reproduced at approximately 1:100,000, around 1.3× larger, making the original cartography and place names easier to see.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.

  • Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
