Historic mapping of Salford and its surrounding landscape, reproduced as a mug from Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping.

What this map covers

This map of Salford reaches into the surrounding area, including Manchester and Droylsden.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 8 · Liverpool & Manchester, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Salford rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.

Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1904.
