What this map covers
Salisbury appears within a wider mapped area that also includes Wilton.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 33 · New Forrest & Isle of Wight, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Salisbury rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.
It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1902.
