Sandsend and its wider landscape shown in Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping, reproduced as a wooden coaster.

What this map covers

The historic mapping around Sandsend reaches into North York Moors National Park and also includes The Lake. It also takes in Whitby, Lythe and Newholm.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 7 · York & Scarborough, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Sandsend rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country.

It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
