What this map covers
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park forms part of the wider mapped setting around Saundersfoot, with River Ritec also within the view. It also takes in Tenby, Pentlepoir and Begelly.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 21 · Pembroke, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Saundersfoot rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography.
The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. This particular source was published in 1903.
