What this map covers
This historic view of Schiehallion takes in Crossmount, Lassintullich, West Tempar and Dalchosnie, with Meall Liath also part of the mapped landscape.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 12 · Central Perthshire, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Schiehallion rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
