About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 26 · Essex, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Southend-on-Sea rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. This particular source was published in 1903.
