What this map covers
Cornwall National Landscape forms part of the wider mapped setting around St Mawes, with College Reservoir also within the view. It also takes in Falmouth, Penryn and Bohortha.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 37 · Cornwall, 1903, focusing the original cartography around St Mawes rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. This particular source was published in 1903.
