What this map covers
Part of North York Moors National Park falls within this map of Staithes, along with Staithes Beck. It also takes in Loftus, Brotton and Hinderwell.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 7 · York & Scarborough, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Staithes rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Bartholomew's coloured treatment of relief gives the maps much of their visual identity, making the shape of uplands and lowlands readable before individual labels are examined. This particular source was published in 1903.
